“If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it.” -Dr. John H. Kennell

Doulas are trained professionals who can help support you during pregnancy, labor and delivery, as well as the postnatal transition into parenting.

Birth Doulas

Birth doulas can be hired at anytime during your pregnancy (but the earlier the better). While there is variability between professionals, when hiring a birth doula, you can expect to pay somewhere between $300 and $3,500 dollars. For that flat fee you typically get two in-person prenatal meetings, access to them by phone, text, and email throughout your pregnancy and immediate postpartum period and someone who is call to support you (and your partner) continuously throughout your birth. Birth Doulas do not perform any medical acts but are there to provide physical and emotional support as well as informational guidance.

Research has shown that not only are women with continuous labor support more likely to report a positive birth experience they also had shorter labors, less pain medication, fewer cesareans and assisted birth with cesareans or forceps. (Bohren, M.A., Hofmeyr, G.J., Sakala, C., Fukuzawa, R.K., & Cuthbert, A. (2017). Continuous support for women during childbirth. Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2017(7), 1-162.)

Postpartum Doulas

Postpartum Doulas visit you at home after your baby has been born. They help with newborn care, cooking, light housekeeping, and over all metal health. Ashley often describes postpartum doulas as fairy godmothers that will put your baby in a baby carrier, let you go take a shower and a nap, and make some soup so when you wake up you can eat a home cooked meal. “Like your mom, but better.” *With advanced lactation experience they can also assist with breastfeeding and pumping.

you only get one chance to have this baby. education + support make all the difference. (we’re telling you so you don’t have to rely on hindsight.)

At this time, Ashley Brichter is focused on reaching more expectant and new parents with education through Birth Smarter and is not currently offering doula services. If interested, we work hard to make sure all of our students are matched with some of the best doulas in NYC through personal connections and partner agencies.
